Ruhrpumpen Has Developed High-Performance Fire Pump Package with Electric & Diesel Drives

Spotlight

The scope of supply consists of a fully integrated fire protection pumping system engineered in accordance with NFPA 20 standards for heavy industrial service. The package includes Ruhrpumpen ZW series horizontal split-case fire pumps (BB1 design), featuring single-stage, between-bearings construction with UL/FM certification for fire protection applications.

The systems incorporate configurations with ductile iron or cast iron casings combined with 316 stainless steel fitted internals, including impellers, shaft sleeves, and wear rings, providing enhanced corrosion resistance and long-term operational reliability. The pumps are equipped with grease-lubricated bearing housings, packed stuffing box sealing arrangements with API Plan 7311 recirculation, high-pressure RF flanged connections, and certified accessories such as air release valves, circulation relief valves, pressure instrumentation, waste cones, and FM-approved flow meters.

The fire pumps are driven by both electric motor and diesel engine configurations depending on system duty requirements. The electric-driven unit utilizes a medium-voltage TEFC induction motor rated approximately 350 HP at 6600 V / 50 Hz, coupled through a flexible coupling with OSHA-compliant guard and controlled through a Tornatech MPA UL/FM-listed controller with Modbus TCP/IP communication capability.

The diesel-driven package incorporates a UL/FM-certified Clarke C18 engine rated approximately 510 HP at 1760 rpm, complete with 24 VDC starting system, jacket water heater, industrial exhaust silencer, freshwater cooling loop, anti-spark driveline protection, and a UL-142 double-wall diesel fuel tank with integrated leak monitoring and safety accessories. The Tornatech GPD diesel controller provides comprehensive engine and pump supervision, including alarms for overspeed, low oil pressure, high temperature, low fuel level, leak detection, and failed start conditions.

The system also includes a vertical in-line jockey pump designed to maintain system pressure stability during standby conditions. The jockey pump features OH4 vertical in-line construction with cast iron and stainless steel materials, mechanical seal arrangement, vertical rigid coupling, and a dedicated UL-listed controller compliant with NFPA 20 requirements.

Supporting infrastructure includes a fully integrated pumphouse with suction and discharge piping systems designed per NFPA 20, overhead-supported piping in accordance with NFPA 13, steel valves and fittings, sprinkler protection, forced ventilation and air conditioning systems with automatic shutdown, complete electrical and mechanical installation, 500 lux lighting system, and an ASME-rated hydropneumatic tank for pressure stabilization. All exposed equipment and piping are protected with a high-performance C5 anticorrosion coating system utilizing SSPC-SP10 surface preparation, zinc-rich primer, high-build epoxy intermediate coats, and polyurethane topcoat in RAL 3001 fire protection red, suitable for severe industrial and high-humidity environments.
